Storms and Hail Wreak Havoc in Bihar; 8 Dead, Mango and Litchi Crops Destroyed. Storm and hailstorm in Bihar, 8 people died. Mango and litchi crops ruined

The severe thunderstorm, torrential rain and hailstorm that occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday in many districts of North and East Bihar has caused huge devastation. So far, eight people have died tragically in the state due to this natural disaster, while many people have been seriously injured.

The speed of the storm was so fast that hundreds of trees were uprooted at many places, roofs of houses were blown away and a blackout-like situation was created in many districts due to breaking of electric poles and wires. Expressing deep grief over this disaster, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has announced compensation for the dependents of the deceased.

Maximum devastation in Muzaffarpur and Champaran, 4 dead

The maximum impact of this extreme weather was seen in the districts of North Bihar:

  • Four deaths: Trees and mud houses fell due to strong winds in Muzaffarpur, East Champaran and West Champaran districts. Four people, including two innocent children and an elderly woman, lost their lives after being buried under the debris.

  • Condition of East Bihar: Four other people have also been confirmed dead in separate accidents in Bhagalpur and surrounding districts of East Bihar.

  • Bridge collapsed and roads closed: An old bridge built on Dariyapur-Harthapur road located in Shahkund of Bhagalpur was completely destroyed in this disaster. At the same time, due to huge trees falling on the roads, traffic on the Bhagalpur-Bounsi main road came to a complete standstill for hours.

Mango and litchi orchards were destroyed, a mountain of sorrow fell on the farmers.

This is the season of ripening of Bihar’s famous mango and royal litchi crops, but this unseasonal storm and hail has ruined the year-long hard work of the farmers.

  • Disadvantages of litchi and mango: In many districts including Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Madhubani, ripe litchi and mango fruits standing on trees were broken by the gusts of wind and scattered on the ground. The fruits have been stained due to hailstorm, due to which their market value will be negligible.

  • These crops got a lease of life: However, this rain did not cause damage everywhere. Green vegetables, sugarcane and moong crops, which were struggling with the dry heat, have received sufficient moisture from this rain, which is expected to benefit these crops.

Dozens of poles uprooted, MD of electricity company reached Bhagalpur

In many districts including Bhagalpur and Darbhanga, hoardings, banners and solar panels installed on the roofs of houses flew in the air like cards. There was chaos at dozens of places in Bhagalpur city and rural areas due to falling of electric poles and breaking of high-tension wires. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, MD of South Bihar Power Distribution Company, Rahul Kumar himself reached Bhagalpur to take stock of the ground situation and restore power supply.
