In the changing times and today’s selfish world, it has become the most difficult task to differentiate between a true and false person. Many times we trust people in a hurry and later get cheated. India’s great economist and guide Acharya Chanakya has given such an infallible mantra in the fifth chapter of his famous book ‘Chanakya Niti’, with the help of which you can easily recognize the real face and character of any person.
Acharya Chanakya has written a very famous verse comparing man with gold:
‘Yatha chaturbhih kanakam parikshyate nirgharshanam chhedanatapatadanaih. And Chaturbhih Purusham Parikshyate Tyagen Sheelen Gunen Karmana.’
Simple meaning of the verse: Just as the purity and genuineness of gold is tested after rubbing, cutting, heating it in fire and beating it with a hammer; In the same way, the reality and character of any person is tested by his sacrifice, modesty (character), qualities and deeds.
These are the 4 surefire criteria for judging a person:
Acharya Chanakya says that before forming a deep relationship with any person or trusting him blindly, one must weigh him on these four parameters:
1. Test of Sacrifice
According to Acharya Chanakya, the first test of any person is his sacrifice. A true and selfless person is one who can sacrifice his personal happiness and selfishness for the welfare of others or in difficult times. People who stay with you only in your good days and retreat after seeing their own benefit in your times of crisis, can never be true companions. Only the person who shows courage and sacrifice to stand up for you in adverse circumstances is worthy of trust.
2. Test of Character
The second parameter is the modesty of the person, which we call character or behavior. The true character of any person is reflected in his way of talking, his morality and his restraint in adverse situations. Chanakya says that a person who does not lose his dignity even in the face of extreme anger or crisis, respects women and children and remains firm on his promises, has a very strong character. No matter how rich or powerful a person without character is, he should never be trusted.
3. Test of Virtues
In Chanakya Niti, human qualities have been described as the biggest asset of a human being. Qualities like knowledge, humility, courage, compassion, honesty and hard work are the real identity of a great human being. The person who incorporates these virtues within himself not only progresses in life but also inspires the society and his close ones to move forward. On the contrary, a person who only pretends to look good on the outside but is full of vices on the inside, proves to be hollow to the society.
4. Test of Action
According to Acharya Chanakya, the fourth and most decisive criterion is the actions of the person. No matter how sweet and big a person speaks, unless his actions are good, his words are meaningless. There is so much difference between a person’s words and actions – this reveals his true intentions. No matter how big a trouble a person with a right and pure soul gets into, he never chooses unrighteousness or a wrong path (shortcut). Karma is the ultimate decider of a man’s fate and identity.
Learning not to rush into relationships:
Chanakya Niti cautions us that we should never be hasty in telling or trusting the secrets of our lives to any unknown person. Give time to people, closely observe their behavior and reaction in different situations and then take a decision. A true and honest person turns from coal to a diamond with time, whereas a selfish person changes his color with the passage of time. In today’s era, this wisdom of Chanakya is very relevant to keep oneself safe and earn true relationships in life.
