Along with air connectivity, a big and historic plan has come forward for the expansion of rail infrastructure in Bihar. The Railway Ministry has approved the construction of 29 new railway lines and their alignment to ease traffic and connectivity in Bihar.

Under this ambitious project, Railway Board has released a fund of Rs 2.67 crore (Rs 267 lakh) for the initial financial year 2026-27 for preliminary engineering-cum-traffic survey (PETS) of new railway lines totaling 1763.87 km long. The main objective of this survey is to ensure that more and more rural and urban areas of Bihar are connected to the main rail network. After completion of the survey report, it will be handed over to the concerned railway division.

Survey will be done for new railway lines on these major routes

The major railway lines for which survey is being started to connect different parts of Bihar are as follows:

  • Nawada-Giridih: longest being satagwan 130 kilometers Route of.

  • Banka-Jamui-Nawada: Another important road connecting South Bihar 165 kilometers Route of.

  • Thawe-Motihari-Chhoradano: To increase connectivity in North Bihar 90 kilometers Line of.

  • Bihar Sharif-Jehanabad: via Ekangarsarai 65 kilometers Rail link of.

  • Bhagwanpur-Mahua-Tajpur-Samastipur: connecting Vaishali and Samastipur districts 60 kilometers Line of.

  • Madhubani-Janakpur Road: with support 50 kilometers (Near Nepal border).

  • Islampur-Bodhgaya: via Manpur 50 kilometers Religious tourism route.

Apart from this, technical survey of many other important routes like Ghoguardia to Ghoghepur (50 km), Pawapuri to Nawada (35 km), Maheshkhunt to Narayanpur (40 km), and Chakia-Kesaria (near Virat Ramayana Temple at Kaithwalia) will also be conducted.

Third line to be built on Kiul-Jhajha route at a cost of ₹965 crore

Railway Board has given another big gift for the passengers traveling on Howrah-Delhi Main Rail Corridor. Final approval has been given for the construction of 54 km long third railway line between Kiul and Jhajha. This entire project will cost Rs 965 crore.

While both the third and fourth lines are to be constructed from DDU (Mughalsarai) to Kiul, the work on this newly approved third line between Kiul to Jhajha will be started expeditiously. The third and fourth lines between Fatuha and Kiul have already been approved.

What will be the benefits of building a third line?

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav underlined the importance of this project and explained its main benefits:

Capacity Increase: The transportation capacity of trains on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route will increase significantly.

Punctuality: Due to reduction in pressure on the tracks, the problem of lateness of passenger trains and express trains will end and there will be a drastic improvement in operations.

Smooth operation of goods trains: With the availability of additional tracks, uninterrupted movement of freight trains can also be ensured without stopping passenger trains, which will boost trade.
