News India Live, Digital Desk: Once again a bloody massacre of elephants has been seen in the Chandil forest area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand. In the early hours of Sunday, a wild elephant entered the village and brutally crushed a mother and her innocent daughter to death. After this heart-wrenching incident, there is chaos in the entire area and huge anger is being seen among the villagers against the forest department. The increasing attacks by wild elephants have given villagers sleepless nights and people are now feeling unsafe in their own homes.

Attacked while sleeping: Didn’t even get a chance to scream According to the information, the incident took place in a remote village of Chandil police station area. The deceased was sleeping with her daughter in the verandah of the house, when a huge elephant that had strayed from the forest came there. Before both of them could understand anything or run away, the elephant attacked them. Eyewitnesses said that the elephant picked up both of them with its trunk, threw them and crushed them under its feet. By the time the villagers reached there with sticks and torches after hearing the screams, the elephant had fled towards the forest and the mother and daughter had died.

Anger erupted against the forest department, demand for compensation As soon as information about the incident was received, the local police and forest department team reached the spot. However, angry villagers stopped the dead bodies from being lifted and started demanding compensation as well as concrete steps to drive away the elephants. Villagers allege that herds of elephants have been hovering near residential areas for the last several days, but only formal patrolling is being done by the forest department. The villagers have warned that if they are not freed from the terror of ‘Gajraj’ soon, they will be forced to carry out violent agitation.

The main reason is the increasing interference in the elephant corridor. Forest experts believe that due to deforestation and increasing human interference in the elephant corridors, elephants are now moving to villages in search of food. This area of Chandil is considered sensitive for elephants. Forest Department officials have assured the victim’s family of immediate financial assistance under government provisions and have said that additional ‘anti-degradation teams’ will be deployed to monitor the elephants.
