News India Live, Digital Desk: India has hoisted the flag of its diplomacy in ‘Tuvalu’, a small but strategically important country situated amidst the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Modi government’s Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, by making a historic visit to Tuvalu, has not only given bilateral relations a new height but has also established India’s strong presence in this region where the dragon (China) is under increasing influence. This is the first visit of an Indian minister to Tuvalu, which experts in global politics are considering as a game changer.

India’s focus on the island countries of the Pacific Ocean

This visit of Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita is an important part of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and ‘SAGAR’ vision. The deepening relations with countries like Tuvalu show that India is no longer limited to only big countries, but is also giving priority to small island countries (PICs) of the Pacific Ocean which are sensitive to climate change and maritime security. Margherita met Tuvalu’s top leadership and extended cooperation in infrastructure, health and disaster management.

India’s ‘silent’ response to China’s expansionist policy

In the last few years, China has tried to increase its military dominance by ensnaring the countries of the Pacific Ocean in the trap of huge loans and investments. This activism of India is a direct attempt to balance that influence. India has assured Tuvalu that it will contribute to their development as a ‘trusted partner’ and not trap them in debt. During this visit, serious issues like maritime security and information sharing were also discussed, which is important for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.

New Delhi stands together in the fight against climate change

Tuvalu is among the countries in the world that are most at risk of drowning due to rising sea levels. India has reiterated its resolve to help Tuvalu through the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and other forums. Holy Margherita clarified that India, by becoming the voice of the Global South, will continue to raise the concerns of these small countries on global forums. This historic journey has made it clear that the glory of the tricolor is going to increase further in the distant Pacific.
