News India Live, Digital Desk: The Election Commission has announced the dates of by-elections to fill the vacant seat of Bihar Legislative Council. With this announcement, political activity has once again intensified in the state. According to the program released by the Commission, on this seat 12 May 2026 Voting will be held on and two days later i.e. 14th May The results will be declared with the counting of votes.

Why is this by-election happening?

This seat of the Legislative Council was vacant due to resignation or untimely demise of a member (as per context, sometimes seats become vacant due to selection in Rajya Sabha or appointment to other posts). Since the Legislative Council is the upper house, the results of this by-election have become a matter of prestige for both the ruling coalition and the opposition of the state. Victory on this seat will also affect the numerical equations in the House.

The Election Commission has clarified the complete time table for this by-election:

Date of release of notification: The process will start in the last week of April.

Last date of nomination: Candidates will be able to file forms till the first week of May.

Voting: Voting will be held from morning to evening on 12 May 2026.

Results: The name of the winner will be announced after counting of votes on 14 May 2026.

The key will be in the hands of Assembly Members (MLAs)

This election will not be held directly by the public, but through elected MLAs. Given the balance of power between the NDA and the Grand Alliance in the current assembly, this contest is expected to be quite interesting. Both the camps have already started making strategies to ensure their victory.

With the announcement of elections, the rules of code of conduct have become effective in the respective areas. The Election Commission has clarified that the voting process will be conducted in a completely transparent and peaceful manner.
