The state government has opened the treasury for the long pending ‘Amanat Barrage Project’. In the high level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, revised administrative approval of Rs 786 crore has been given for this ambitious project. This decision is going to change the picture of drought affected areas of Palamu district. This barrage to be built on the Amanat River will not only solve the irrigation crisis, but will also give a new impetus to the economy of the area by improving the ground water level.
‘Amanat Barrage’ will quench the thirst of thousands of acres of land
Amanat Barrage Project is no less than a lifeline for the farmers of Palamu. This huge amount sanctioned by the government will speed up the construction work of the barrage. Upon completion of this project, thousands of acres of agricultural land in blocks like Panki, Lesliganj and Manatu of the district will directly benefit. Farmers who were till now dependent on monsoon will now be able to grow two to three crops in a year. The Water Resources Department has clarified that modern technology will be used in the construction work so that maximum harvesting of water can be ensured.
Work will be done on displaced people and canal network
A major part of this sanctioned amount of Rs 786 crore will be spent on strengthening and expansion of canals. Under the project, a network of distributaries will be laid along the main canals so that water can reach the fields located at the tail end. Along with this, adequate provisions have also been made for compensation and rehabilitation of the displaced people affected by the project. The government aims to make this project fully functional within the next two years so that the farmers of Palamu start getting its benefits.
There will be a brake on migration, employment opportunities will open
Palamu has been considered an area of ’black water’ and drought for decades, due to which there is a large-scale migration of laborers from here. Local public representatives believe that with the construction of Amanat Barrage, when the fields will become greener, migration will automatically stop. Agro-based industries will be promoted and new employment opportunities will be created at the local level. Opposition parties have also welcomed this step, although they have asked to be cautious about the quality of work and time limit. At present, after this approval, there is an atmosphere of celebration in the villages of Palamu.
