News India Live, Digital Desk: The politics of Uttar Pradesh has always been interesting, but this time the matter is not about the speech of any leader, but about ‘counting of votes’. Such a news has come from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, after reading which perhaps you too will start scratching your head. When the administration sat down to examine the voter list in preparation for the upcoming elections, it came across some figures which were difficult to digest.

Surprisingly, in many parts of the district Assembly Elections compared to Panchayat Election The number of voters in the list is much more. The question is that when there is only one voter in an area, then how does this number increase or decrease in different lists?

‘Dangerous’ theft of 12 lakh duplicate voters
According to administrative officials, in the investigation conducted at the entire district and division level, more than 12 lakh names have been found which fall in the category of ‘duplicate’ or ‘fake’. Meaning, if the name of the same person is different in the Assembly list, then in the Panchayat list he is registered from three different places. At some places, this number is so high that the administration feels as if the population has magically increased overnight.

Why does this mess happen?
Today is January 8, 2026, and we talk about Digital India, yet such negligence raises questions on the system. In fact, often when people move from one place to another, they get registered at the new place without getting their name deleted from the old place. Apart from this, many times, due to local politics, names of people from the same family are put in different wards so that the vote bank can be strengthened. In this, many times the names of the dead and the names of the people who have been ‘shifted’ remain in the list for years.

The administration has now raised the ‘stick’
In view of this fraud, the administration has started a ‘cleanliness’ campaign. Those 12 lakh additional names are being sorted through software and door-to-door verification. The officials have clearly said that under no circumstances will there be any scope for ‘extra or fake’ voters in the elections.

Please check your name in the voter list
This news is a big lesson for all of us. If you live in Gorakhpur or any district of Uttar Pradesh, then be aware and check your name in your voter list. If any member of your family has moved out or is no longer in the house, it is your responsibility to get their name deleted.
