News India Live, Digital Desk: Records keep being made in the game of cricket, some good and some bad. But no player wants a record in his name which he would be embarrassed to remember. One such unwanted record is now in the name of India’s new Test opening pair KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The pair failed miserably in the second innings of the Indian team in the ongoing first Test match against South Africa at the famous Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India had a simple target of just 124 runs to win the match, but the team’s start was like a nightmare. The balls of South African fast bowler Marco Janson wreaked such havoc that both the Indian openers could not stay at the crease.
What is this shameful record?
In this innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal could not even open his account and was out for zero, while captain KL Rahul went on after scoring only one run. In this way, both the opening batsmen together added only 1 run for the team. This is the lowest combined score made by Indian opening batsmen in an innings of any Test match played on Indian soil.
Rahul-Jaiswal on the path of Gambhir-Sehwag
You will be surprised to know that exactly 15 years ago, in 2010, exactly the same thing happened with one of India’s most successful opening pairs, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. In a test match against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Sehwag (1) and Gambhir (0) together scored only 1 run. Now after so many years, the pair of Rahul and Jaiswal has equaled the same unwanted record.
This is a performance that both the batsmen, especially young Yashasvi Jaiswal, would like to forget as soon as possible. On home grounds, where Jaiswal bats a lot, his calmness in both the innings of this match is a matter of concern for the team management as well.
