When it comes to skincare, we do not hesitate to spend thousands of rupees on the most expensive products. But do you know that a simple thing in your kitchen, ‘Ghee’, can compete with any luxury moisturizer? Yes, ghee is no less than magic not only in eating but also in making the skin young and glowing.

Recently, celebrity macrobiotic coach Dr. Shilpa Arora surprised everyone by doing an experiment on social media. He applied a very expensive luxury cream on one side and ‘Ghee Cream’ made from a 5,000 year old Ayurvedic recipe on the other. The results were shocking! “Believe me, shine doesn’t always come with a price,” he wrote.

So what is this magical ghee cream and does it really work? Come, let us know from the experts.

What is this ‘washed ghee’? (What is Washed Ghee?)

This is not ordinary ghee. In Ayurveda it is called ‘Shata Dhauta Ghrita’ i.e. ‘100 times washed ghee’. According to Ayurvedic practitioners, this is an ancient beauty secret.

How is it made?
To make it, pure ghee is placed in a copper vessel and washed 100 times with cold water. After this lengthy process, ghee turns into an extremely light, non-greasy, whipped cream-like texture. It is believed that this cream becomes so light that it penetrates into all seven layers of the skin and gives it moisture from within. It was also used in Ayurveda to soothe irritations and skin diseases.

Ghee vs. Moisturizers on the market: What does science say?

We spoke to a dermatologist about this, so we can understand the perspective of both traditional wisdom and modern science.

Benefits of Ghee (The Good Side):
Dr. Shweta Nakhwa, Consultant Dermatologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, says that pure ghee can be very beneficial for the skin.

  • A treasure trove of nutrients: It contains abundant amounts of vitamins A, D, and E, which are essential for the skin, which help in repairing cells.
  • Natural Moisturizer: The healthy fats present in it deeply moisturize the skin, giving a healthy glow.
  • Anti-aging properties: The antioxidants present in ghee slow down the aging process.
  • Skin Repair: It also helps repair the skin’s natural barrier and reduce minor irritations.

Who should be careful? (The Warning):
Not everything is for everyone, and the same applies to ghee. Dr. Nakhawa warns that people with oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin should avoid applying it on the face.

Why? Because the texture of ghee is a bit heavy and it can clog the pores of the skin, which can further increase acne. For such people, light and gel-based moisturizers are best.

Some more easy ways to use ghee

  • For dry skin: After bathing, massage the entire body with lukewarm ghee. The skin will become soft and glowing.
  • For cracked and dark lips: Apply a thin layer of ghee on the lips before sleeping at night. Your lips will feel soft in the morning.
  • For dark circles: Ghee is a great and affordable under-eye cream. Every night, gently massage under the eyes with your fingers.

Last advice:
Always use pure, organic or homemade ghee. And yes, ghee is not a cure for serious skin problems like eczema or psoriasis. Always do a patch test before using.
