News India Live, Digital Desk: Check Almond Quality : Almonds are considered a treasure of health. Rich in Vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids and many other essential nutrients, almonds are beneficial for our memory and heart. But do you know that the almonds which you are buying at such expensive prices considering them healthy, can also be fake or adulterated?
During the festive season or in winter, when the demand for dry fruits increases, some unscrupulous businessmen launch fake almonds in the market in order to earn more profits. These fake almonds are often polished with chemicals and artificial colors, which can cause serious harm to your health instead of benefits.
But don’t panic. You do not need to be cheated in the market. Today we are telling you some easy and home based methods by which you can identify real and fake almonds in just a few minutes.
1. Pay attention to color
This is the first and easiest method. The color of real almond is light brown and its surface feels a little rough. At the same time, the color of fake or adulterated almonds will often be darker or dark brown than required. For more shine, they are polished with chemicals, due to which they look smooth and very shiny. If an almond is shining excessively, then understand that something is wrong.
2. Try rubbing it on your palm
Whenever you buy almonds, take 4-5 seeds in your palm and rub them vigorously. If you get brown color of almond or any kind of powder on your palm, then it is a clear indication that the almond has been colored from above. Real almonds do not leave any color when rubbed.
3. Water test
This is a surefire way to identify adulteration. Put a handful of almonds in a glass of plain water. If the almonds are real then they will sink in water because they are heavy. However, if the almonds are fake or of very old quality, they will float on the surface of the water. Apart from this, if the color of the water starts changing or turns brown, then understand that the almonds are adulterated.
4. Try pressing on paper
Real almonds naturally contain rich amounts of oil. To identify it, take a white paper and place some almonds on it and press or crush them with your hands. If the almonds are real, oil stains will be visible on the paper. If there is no trace of oil on the paper, it means that either the almonds are very old or they are not almonds at all.
5. Identify by taste and smell
If the shopkeeper allows, then definitely taste one or two almonds. Real almonds taste slightly sweet and crunchy. Whereas the taste of adulterated almonds is often bitter or strange. Real, fresh almonds also have a mild, nutty aroma, while fake almonds have no distinct aroma.
By taking care of these small things, you can not only save your money from getting wasted, but can also prevent playing with the health of you and your family.
