News India Live, Digital Desk: Every date and festival has its own special significance in Hindu religion, but there are some days which are considered very rare and unique. One such holy date is Chaudas of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, which is known as ‘Vaikuntha Chaturdashi’. This is the only day of the year when Lord Vishnu, the preserver of creation, and Lord Shiva, the destroyer, are worshiped together. Due to this amazing coincidence, it is also called the day of ‘Harihar Milan’.

It is believed that on this day, the doors of heaven or Vaikuntha open for the person who fasts and worships with full faith and devotion. This year this holy festival of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi will be celebrated on Tuesday, 4 November 2025.

Why is Vaikuntha Chaturdashi special? Know the mythological story

There is a very beautiful mythology behind this day. According to Shiva Purana, once Lord Vishnu reached his favorite city Kashi to worship Mahadev, the Lord of Gods. After taking bath at Manikarnika Ghat, he resolved to offer one thousand golden lotuses to Lord Shiva.

When Lord Vishnu was worshipping, Mahadev hid one lotus among those thousand lotuses to test his devotion. When Vishnuji found one lotus less, he decided to offer one of his ‘Kamal Nayan’ (eyes like a lotus) to Bholenath. Just as he was about to offer his eye, Lord Shiva appeared there. He was extremely pleased to see such exclusive devotion to Lord Vishnu and gifted him the priceless Sudarshan Chakra.

Bholenath also gave a boon that any devotee who observes a fast on the day of Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi and worships you (Lord Vishnu) will attain Vaikuntha Lok. Since then this day started being celebrated as Vaikuntha Chaturdashi.
