News India Live, Digital Desk: Canada Immigration : There was a time when youth from small towns of India used to move to Canada with the dream of a better future and good education. Canada also welcomed him with open arms. But now the mood has changed. Canada, which was once considered a country of opportunities, is now continuously receiving disappointing news for Indian students.
The recently revealed figures are extremely shocking. According to reports, three out of every four Indian students who applied for Canada in August 2025 had their student visas rejected. This figure has reached 74%, which was quite low till a few years ago. Just two years ago, in August 2023, the rate was just 32%. After all, what happened that Canada’s attitude became so strict towards Indian students?
Why are the dreams of Indian students being broken?
There are many big reasons behind this flood of visa rejections, which are important to understand.
1. Trap of fake documents:
The biggest and most important reason is the large-scale fraud in visa applications. Recently, Canadian authorities caught about 1,550 such cases in which fake college acceptance letters were planted. Most of these cases were related to India. After this big fraud came to light, Canada has made the investigation process very strict.
2. Stringent Terms and Conditions:
Apart from cracking down on fraud, the Canadian government now also wants to control the number of immigrants coming into the country. Many new and strict rules have been implemented for this:
- Increased financial need: Students now have to show more money in their bank accounts than ever before.
- Proof of return: Now it has become more difficult than before to prove that the student will return to India after completing his studies. Officials are examining every application very closely.
3. Decreasing applications and increasing fear:
This strict stance of Canada has also had a direct impact on the number of visa applications. While 20,900 Indian students applied for visas in August 2023, the number dropped dramatically to just 4,515 in August 2025. This shows that there is now an atmosphere of fear and hesitation among students and their families about Canada.
4. Diplomatic tension between the two countries:
Even if the officials do not admit it openly, the political tension that has been going on between India and Canada for some time also seems to be affecting the visa process.
Questions looming over the future of students
Canada’s changing rules have put a question mark on the dreams of millions of Indian students and their families who have staked lakhs of rupees for a better future. There was a time when Canadian universities and colleges were largely dependent on Indian students, but now there is also a huge decline in the admission of Indian students.
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has expressed concern over the matter, but has also clarified that granting or denying visas is entirely an internal matter of the Canadian government.
Overall, Canada, which was once the dream of “work, study, and settle” for Indian youth, now faces many big and difficult obstacles in the way of that dream.
