One voice… and Trump got angry! Took ‘revenge’ from Canada, imposed new tariff of 10%, trade war at its peak

The ongoing trade tussle between two neighboring countries, America and Canada, has now turned into a big trade war. A TV advertisement has added fuel to this fire, in which the voice of former US President Ronald Reagan was used. Enraged by this advertisement, US President Donald Trump has announced that an additional tariff (import duty) of 10% will be imposed on goods coming from Canada.

Root of controversy: The advertisement in which Ronald Reagan’s voice was

This entire controversy started when the government of the Canadian province of Ontario ran a TV advertisement during the World Series. The advertisement used the audio of an old speech by former US President Ronald Reagan, in which he was saying that tariffs are harmful to the economy of any country and trade wars should be avoided.

The ad was a direct jab at Trump’s protectionist trade policies, and he didn’t like that at all.

Trump got angry, called it ‘hostile action’

Trump called this ad ‘fraudulent’ and a ‘hostile act’. He wrote on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’ that the Ontario government deliberately misused Reagan’s words to criticize his trade policies.

“Because of this misrepresentation of facts and this hostile action, I am increasing the tariffs already in place on Canada by 10%,” Trump wrote.

Reactions came from all sides, Canada withdrew the advertisement

After Trump’s anger, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation also objected to this advertisement. He said that Reagan’s speech was used without his permission, which is wrong.

After increasing pressure, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the withdrawal of the ad. However, he defended his message, saying, “Our intention was not to attack, we just wanted to encourage open and fair trade.”

On the other hand, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that his country is ready for talks instead of increasing tension. He appealed to America to maintain ‘mutual respect’ in trade matters.

Now what next? American businessmen are haunted by fear

After Trump’s announcement, the White House has reportedly stopped the trade talks between America and Canada. American business groups have also warned that increasing tariffs on goods coming from Canada will have a direct impact on the American people. This may increase the prices of goods (inflation may increase) and the supply chain between the two countries may also be disrupted.
