Non-stick utensils have become the biggest identity of today’s modern kitchen. Food does not stick, oil seems less, and too easy to clean. This is the reason that today non-stick pan and pan have made their place in every house. But have you ever thought that the pot you are considering as a friend of your health can actually be the biggest enemy of your family’s health?
This may seem a bit scary to hear, but this is the truth.
That black truth of non-stick utensils
There is a special kind of layer over these utensils, which is called ‘teflon’. This is the layer that does not allow food to stick. But the real problem is with this layer. This teflon is formed from a chemical ‘polythetraflooroheelin’ (PTFE), which was found to be another dangerous chemical called Perfluroctenoic Acid (PFOA), which many companies now claim not to use.
The problem begins when we heat these utensils on high heat.
- When poison starts dissolving in the air: As soon as you offer non-stick pan on high heat, within 2 to 5 minutes its coating starts leaving poisonous smoke and particles. They are so small that we do not even see and reach our body directly through breath. This can make you ‘teflon flu’, whose symptoms are exactly like common flu- headache, body pain, and chills. You ignore it as the effect of the weather, while the real reason is your pan.
- Food becomes slow poison when scratched: Often we scratch these utensils with steel or pointed spoon, which causes light scratches on them. These scratches do not only spoil the vessel, but every time cooking, the poisonous particles of teflon go straight into our stomach. These chemicals do not get out of the body easily and can be gradually accumulated and can cause serious diseases like cancer.
- Not only cancer, there are more danger: Research suggests that prolonged use of chemicals found in these utensils increases the risk of thyroid, liver and kidney diseases. Not only this, it can also affect the fertility of both women and men.
Then what should we do? Throw your non-stick pot?
It may not be possible to throw it out completely, but by taking some precautions you can reduce its risk:
- Never cook on high heat: Always use these utensils on slow or medium heat.
- Protect from scratching: Never use steel spoon. Always use only wood or silicone spoon. If the pot has scratched, stop using it immediately.
- Return to old and healthy options: Try to place iron, steel, soil or brass utensils back to your kitchen. They probably ask for a little hard work to clean, but they are completely safe for your health.
Remember, there is no treasure greater than health. We cannot put our life at stake in the process of eating less oil. Change a little, and make your kitchen healthy.
