News India Live, Digital Desk: Head of interim government of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus Has threatened to resign. This step has been taken following the opposition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and warning of the country’s Army Chief General War-Uz-Zaman. It is believed that the government’s interim chief Yunus has not been able to handle the matters of the country properly. Violence, theft and anti -minority incidents have accelerated, due to which Younus has to take such a step.
Protests may begin again in Dhaka
Meanwhile, the student leaders of the country are once again mobilizing the youth and Islamists to protest in Dhaka. India Today Government sources were quoted as saying that they are also planning to march up to the army cantonment.
However, many people also believe that the discussion about Yunus’s resignation may be a trick to start a movement against the army chief who wants to hold elections in the country. If elections are held, Yunus’s term as the real head/Prime Minister of the country will end.
Yunus was silent at that timeD destroyed many important sites in the country. He did not condemn the protests for destroying the residence of Dhanmandi 32 of Mujibur Rahman or banning the Awami League. Not only this, when the minorities (ie Hindus) were being attacked and their places of worship were being damaged by the mob, their silence was still doubtful.
Yunus took over the government soon after the Sheikh Hasina government fell after the student protests in Bangladesh. The protests initially began as a leadership of students against job reservation, but later turned in protest against the government, and Hasina was forced to leave the country. He left Bangladesh on 5 August 2024.
The news of Yunus’s threat of resignation was confirmed by Nahid Islam, one of the leaders of the last year’s agitation and convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP). BBC Talking to Bangla, the party leader formed by the students said that Younus has threatened to resign as he is not able to continue his work amidst the current political atmosphere and protests.
Islam quoted Yunus as saying, “I have been taken hostage. I can’t work like this. Can’t all political parties reach a consensus?”
However, Nahid allegedly urged Yunus to continue the leadership of the government. Yunus suggested the student leaders to form another interim government as they would not be able to remain in their posts.
Apart from the NCP leader, some cabinet ministers such as Information and Broadcasting Advisor Mahfooz Alam and Advisor of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Asif Mahmood also met Younus and persuaded him to continue the leadership of the government.
BNP wants election
Yunus’s resignation threatening came a day after BNP demanded a clear roadmap for elections. India Today “The announcement of a clear roadmap for the election should be given a top priority for the election,” said BNP leader Khandkar Musharraf Hussain.
After the formation of the interim government, the BNP demanded that its candidate be declared the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. The party also demanded the resignation of 2 members of the Younus cabinet, who are considered close to the NCP. It also wants to exclude National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman.
The BNP sees the election as an opportunity to regain power, as Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League, is banned from political activities in the country. The party believes that due to delay in elections, the opportunity to form a government in the country may take away, because this time the NCP is present in the country’s electoral politics.
Many people in Bangladesh believe that Yunus is using students and Islamic crowd as foot soldiers to remain in power and not hold elections. Although Yunus had said that elections will be held in June 2026, but political parties including BNP are getting frustrated in the country.
Relationship between Yunus and Army Chief
Meanwhile, the relationship between Yunus and Army Chief General Vakar-Uz-Zaman is not as comfortable. Zaman gave strict warnings on Wednesday that elections should be held in the country by December this year.
The army chief also accused the Yunus government of taking unilateral decisions and intervening in military matters. Yunus had earlier sent a proposal for the “human” corridor in the state of Rakhin, Myanmar. Army Chief Zaman called it a “bloody corridor”.
The feeling in Bangladesh is increasing that this corridor will encroach over the sovereignty of the country and the US is carrying it forward for its benefit. Yunus is also helping America to remain in power. However, after not getting support from the army, he had to take a U-turn in the matter.
Army chief From Dhaka Tribune Said, “National interest should come first in any action. Whatever is done, it should be directed by political consent.”
