News India Live, Digital Desk: Tourism: Uttarakhand There is a significant change in the tourism scenario, as the number of passengers for the journey of Char Dham Yatra, especially Kedarnath is increasing, while the number of tourists is seen declining at traditional holiday sites such as Nainital, Mussoorie and Jim Corbett National Park.
The state government data shows that with the increase in spiritual tourism in the last decade, the share of holiday sites has steadily declined. In the last 22 days, more than 1,220,664 pilgrims have reached the four Dham pilgrimage centers in Uttarakhand despite rains and other challenges.
Number of tourists increased at Char Dham pilgrimage centers
Char Dham Circuit- Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri- have attracted more tourists than ever before, more than one million pilgrims have come within the first 20 days of the journey season. This indicates a rapid growth compared to previous years, which shows the growing priority among travelers for religious trips compared to the hill station. Between 2019 and 2023, the total number of tourists from Uttarakhand increased by 52 percent, which is a significant increase between 2015 and 2019 compared to a 33.4 percent increase. Within this bounce, pilgrimage sites have recorded unprecedented numbers, attracting both domestic and foreign tourists.
Reduction in the number of tourists in Mussoorie and Nainital
Mussoorie, which was once a major attraction for tourists, came to 6.2 percent of the total tourists of Uttarakhand in 2014, but by 2023 the share declined to only 2.5 percent. Similarly, Nainital’s visitor ratio fell from 3.4 percent to 1.3 percent, while the number of Corbett declined from 1.1 percent to only 0.6 percent. According to the data published in the news website Moneycontrol, the number of tourists visiting Kedarnath increased from just 0.2 percent to 3.3 percent, and increased from 0.7 percent to 3 percent in Badrinath, which reflects the growing attraction of spiritual sites.
Religious tourism declines in Haridwar too
Out of the total tourists visiting Uttarakhand, about two -thirds of tourists visit Haridwar, who are the most viewed tourist places in the state. However, this historic pilgrim city has also seen a decline in the number of tourists in the last few years, which shows a change in travel pattern throughout the region. A state with a population of about 10 million welcomed tourists six times more than the size of its population in 2023, which strengthened the situation as a major religious tourist center in Uttarakhand.
Foreign tourists also fall drastically
Interestingly, foreign travelers have also been away from traditional options, the percentage of foreign tourists in Mussoorie fell from 4.9 percent to 1.5 percent in 2023 in 2014. Meanwhile, Tehri has seen an increase in the number of foreign tourists, which has doubled from 16.1 percent to 31.8 percent in the same period. Despite this, the number of foreign tourists has still not reached the pre -epidemic level, Uttarakhand has 148,412 foreign tourists in 2023, while in 2019 the number was 158,954.
The pace of holiday tourism in Uttarakhand is decreasing, while spiritual sites are gaining prominence
Data underlines how the pace of holiday tourism in Uttarakhand is decreasing while spiritual sites are gaining prominence. Better infrastructure, social media and cultural changes towards public awareness and spiritual experiences through Bollywood, all have contributed to this change. Since the influx of tourists in the state is going to be even more, the authorities may need to rethink strategies to balance the pilgrimage and the holiday journey, so that it can be ensured that various offerings of Uttarakhand are accessible to all types of visitors.
