Jaipur, 09 October (HS). On Wednesday, the court gave its verdict in the Roop Kanwar Sati glorification case that took place 37 years ago in Divrala village of Sikar district in Rajasthan. The Special Court for Prevention of Sati Cases has given the benefit of doubt and acquitted eight accused in the case of glorifying the incident of Roop Kanwar Sati after the 1987 Roop Kanwar sati incident in Divrala, Sikar.

In this case, in the year 2004, 25 people including Pratap Singh, Rajendra Singh Rathod and Roop Kanwar's brother Gopal Singh Rathod were acquitted by the court. Sikar court acquitted 32 people arrested after the incident in October 1996. Now Mahendra Singh, Dashrath Singh, Shravan Singh, Nihal Singh, Jitendra Singh, Uday Singh, Laxman Singh and Bhanwar Singh have been acquitted.

Actually, Jaipur resident Roop Kanwar was married to Malsingh of Divrala. Malsingh died of illness only after about seven months of marriage. At the time of cremation on September 4, 1987, 18-year-old Roop Kanwar died after being burnt along with her husband in the funeral pyre. After this, on September 22, 1988, the people of the society took out a procession from Divrala to Ajitgarh, but due to rain the procession could not move further. At around 8 pm, 45 people sat in the truck and restarted the procession. Due to this, the police arrested these 45 accused. Just four days after their arrest, the police presented the charge sheet against them on September 26. After a long hearing, the court acquitted 25 of these people in 2004. Laxman Singh, accused in the case, had surrendered in the court on September 11, 2019. Out of these 45 people, about half a dozen have died and the same number are absconding.
