Ranchi became a separate Lok Sabha constituency in 1967 and Prashant Kumar Ghosh, the winner of the Ranchi East seat in 1962, was absorbed into the party by the Indian National Congress. This time he got a total of 47.2 percent votes while Bharatiya Janata Party's Ram Tahal Choudhary got 16 percent votes. Janata Party candidate Subodh Kant Sahay got 15.1 percent votes.
In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, this seat once again went out of the hands of the Congress Party and this time Janata Dal candidate Subodh Kant Sahay won this seat. He got 34.3 percent votes while BJP's Ram Tahal Choudhary got 31.2 percent and Indian National Congress's Shiv Prasad Sahu got 26.7 percent votes.
BJP won for the first time in 1991
BJP won the Ranchi seat for the first time in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. This time BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary got 47.6 percent votes, due to which he emerged victorious whereas Janata Dal did not give ticket to Subodh Kant Sahay, who had won from this seat in 1989. Subodh Kant Sahay contested the elections from Jharkhand Party and stood fourth. Janata Dal had made Avadhesh Kumar Singh its candidate, who got 22 percent votes.
In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, BJP once again captured the Ranchi seat. This time also BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary was victorious, getting 35.02 percent votes. This time the Congress party had changed its candidate and made Keshav Mahato Kamlesh its candidate. Indian National Congress got 28.8 percent votes while Janata Dal got 25.9 percent votes. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Ramtal Choudhary once again won from Ranchi seat. He got a total of 57.2 percent votes while Keshav Mahato Kamlesh of the Indian National Congress got 36.6 percent votes.
In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, BJP again captured the Ranchi seat. Ramtahal Chaudhary once again won from Ranchi seat and this time he got 65 percent votes. Indian National Congress, changing its candidate, had fielded KK Tiwari from this seat, but KK Tiwari got a total of 23.7 percent votes.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, after Jharkhand became a state, the first Lok Sabha elections were held on Ranchi seat and this time, Ramtahal Choudhary, who was MP from Ranchi for four consecutive terms, had to face defeat. Indian National Congress made Subodh Kant Sahay its candidate and Subodh Kant Sahay won by getting 40.8 percent votes. BJP's Ramtahal Chaudhary got 38.6 percent votes while Bandhu Tirkey, who contested as an independent, got 7.5 percent votes.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections also, Subodhkant Sahay of the Indian National Congress won the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Subodh Kant Sahay got 42.9 percent votes while BJP's Ramtal Choudhary got 41 percent votes.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP once again captured the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat and this time Ramtahal Chaudhary got 42.7 percent votes while Subodh Kant Sahay of Indian National Congress got 23.8 percent votes. AJSU Party President Sudesh Kumar Mahato, who contested the elections from Ranchi, got 13.6 percent votes. Amitabh Chaudhary of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha got 6.5 percent votes while Bandhu Tirkey, who contested from All India Trimul Congress Party, got a total of 4.4 percent votes.

Angered by this, Ramtahal Chaudhary contested the elections as an independent candidate. However, BJP candidate Sanjay Seth got a total of 57.30 percent votes while Indian National Congress' Subodh Kant Sahay got 34.3 percent votes. Ramtahal Choudhary, who contested as an independent candidate from Ranchi, could get only 2.4 percent votes.
