The biggest question these days among lakhs of central government employees and pensioners is how much work has been completed since the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. Let us tell you that the 8th Pay Commission had a total of 18 months to submit its recommendations, out of which exactly 9 months have passed and now the Commission has only 9 months left to prepare the report. The eyes of the employees are constantly fixed on what proposals the Commission is considering regarding basic pay, fitment factor, dearness allowance (DA) and house rent allowance (HRA).
What information about the time limit has the government given in the Parliament?
The 8th Pay Commission, constituted in November last year, has time till May 2027 to submit its final report to the central government. Recently, in a written reply given by the Finance Ministry in Parliament, it was made clear that the Commission will submit its report to the government within the stipulated time frame. The ministry has also clarified that till now no interim advice or report has been given by the Commission to the government, nor has the government shown any haste in submitting the report before the completion of its 18-month tenure. The report will be presented after a comprehensive study on all aspects within the stipulated time frame.
Employees’ eyes on fitment factor and basic salary
The one thing that is being discussed the most in the entire process of 8th Pay Commission is ‘Fitment Factor’. If we look at the history, the fitment factor during the 6th Pay Commission was 1.86, which was increased to 2.57 in the 7th Pay Commission. Now different and big demands are coming forward from the employee organizations regarding the 8th Pay Commission. Some unions have demanded increasing the fitment factor to 3.83, if this happens then the minimum basic salary of central employees can jump from Rs 18,000 to Rs 69,000. The final calculation of the new salary and pension of the employees is to be decided on the multiplier of this fitment factor.
Meetings are being held with organizations in different parts of the country
At present, the 8th Pay Commission is visiting various states and cities across the country and holding marathon meetings with various unions and organizations associated with government employees, officers and pensioners. Recently, important meetings of the Commission were held in the capital Delhi on 7th and 10th August. Before this, the Commission had visited major cities like Jammu and Kashmir, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata and sought the opinion of the employees there. In the coming days, meetings are also proposed by the Commission in Chandigarh, Chennai and Puducherry, where suggestions from various parties will be recorded.
