A major security incident has come to light from the border Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. A 17-year-old girl from Pakistan’s illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) has been caught by the Indian Army in Lam sector of Nowshera, the forward area of the Line of Control (LoC). After noticing suspicious movement from across the border on Saturday morning, the patrol team immediately surrounded him and took him into custody. According to preliminary information, the girl had crossed the Line of Control and entered Indian territory. The army and intelligence agencies are now trying to find out whether this cross-border infiltration happened due to unintentional deviation or there is some other circumstance behind it.
According to officials, soldiers of the Indian Army’s forward post deployed in the sensitive area of Lam sector recorded suspicious movement of a person near the fence and the Line of Control. Without any delay, the soldiers, exercising restraint and vigilance, warned him to stop and took him safely into their custody. During interrogation, he stated his age to be about 17 years and described himself as a resident of a border village near Pakistan occupied Kashmir. To completely rule out the possibility of any other suspect or infiltrator coming from across the border, the Army and the local police have started an intensive search operation in the surrounding forested and inaccessible roads.
The detained girl has been taken to the local administrative and military camp, where she is being preliminary interrogated in the presence of women police officers. Intelligence agencies are trying to ascertain whether the girl has unknowingly entered the Indian border due to family dispute, tension or dense fog and forest path, or for some other reason. In the past also, mentally ill persons, teenagers and local villagers grazing cattle in Poonch and Rajouri sectors of Pir Panjal have been unknowingly crossing the zero line, and upon confirmation, they are sent back home on humanitarian grounds through flag meetings.
Military and police officials have clarified that security protocols and legal procedures are being fully followed. After the joint interrogation is completed and the real identity and residence of the girl is confirmed, the report will be sent to higher authorities. If the investigation completely proves that the girl has accidentally strayed across the border and no objectionable material is found with her, then the formal process of repatriation will be completed by contacting the Pakistani Army through hotline and flag meeting at the military level.
