Wuhan, October 12 (Hindustan Reporter) China's Zheng Qianwen entered the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open on Friday night after defeating third seed Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The match lasted for two hours and 14 minutes, in which Zheng made it to the semi-finals by hitting 10 aces.

There was a tough competition in the first set from the beginning. Zheng was trailing 0-30 in the opening game, but showed great resilience to break Paolini. Both players held serve in the next few games, but Zheng then won three consecutive games to take the set 6–2. Paolini made a comeback in the second set and broke Zheng twice to win 6-3.

The decisive third set began with both players holding serve at 3-3. After this, Zheng performed better and broke Paolini's serve and held his serve, winning the match 6-3 and securing his place in the semi-finals.

After the match, Zheng said, “Paolini played very well today. “Their attacking play was fantastic and it was definitely my most challenging match of the tournament so far.”

He also expressed his gratitude to the domestic audience for their support. “When I was low on energy, you pushed me forward,” Zheng said, recalling her recent successes on home soil. Your support made a huge difference and I wouldn't have been able to reach the semi-finals without you. Reaching two semi-finals during China's season is certainly not just luck.”

Zheng will next face her compatriot Wang Xinyu, who scored a comeback victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday. This is the first time in history that two Chinese players will face each other in a WTA 1000 event.
