WSPS World Cup concludes, India secures third position with 16 medals

New Delhi, March 15 (HS). The remarkable New Delhi 2024 WSPS World Cup concluded on Thursday, leaving behind a legacy of sporting excellence, cultural exchange and warm hospitality. Amidst the cordial atmosphere and enthusiastic competition, India finished third in the medal table by winning a total of 16 medals.

Rudransh Khandelwal and Mona Agarwal led the Indian shooting contingent with their remarkable performances. Rudransh won 4 medals and Mona won individual gold as well as quota for Paris Paralympics.

China dominated the medal tally. China won a total of 17 medals with 11 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze. France finished second with 5 medals including 3 gold and 2 silver. Whereas, India secured third position with 2 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.

Athletes from 46 countries, comprising around 500 participants, gathered in New Delhi, making it India's grandest Para event ever.

Commenting on the stupendous success of the tournament, Tournament Director, Jai Prakash Nautiyal said in an official statement, “As a Tournament Director, it has been truly gratifying to see the tremendous response from the participants. From the very beginning, the task seemed daunting, but our collective efforts to organize a grand event of a world-class tournament were successful.”

However, Nautiyal regretted falling short of achieving the Paris Paralympic quota, saying, “While celebrating our achievements, it is imperative to acknowledge areas for improvement. The fact that only 9 team quotas have been achieved so far is a sobering realization. We should try harder for good.”

Amidst the sporting excitement, the essence of Indian hospitality and cultural richness enthralled the participants from across the world. Deepa Malik, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, stressed, “Beyond the medals and accolades, the New Delhi 2024 WSPS World Cup has showcased the warmth and diversity of India. Our rich culture, delicious cuisine and iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal have left a lasting impression on all who visit.”

Michael Johnson, a rifle shooter from New Zealand, said, “I had apprehensions before coming to India, but the experience exceeded all expectations. The playing conditions were impeccable, the weather was beautiful, and the cuisine was exquisite. Seeing the Taj Mahal was truly a dream come true.”
