Anti drug operations in the world: 1400 tonnes of drugs have been seized in the world’s largest anti-drug operation led by Colombia. The market value of these medicines is 85 billion dollars (about Rs 7.14 lakh crore). International authorities led by the Colombian Narcotics Bureau seized 1400 tons of drugs, including 128 tons of marijuana and 225 tons of cocaine at the end of a 6-week operation.
Drugs were being transported from South America to Australia
More than 400 people have been arrested with huge quantities of drugs. Colombian authorities did not provide details on where the drugs were seized, other than cocaine and marijuana. But he admitted that drugs more expensive than cocaine had been seized. These drugs were loaded into six semi-submersible ships and transported from South America to Australia. Authorities had been tracking the boat since it left for Australia from the port city of Tumaco on Colombia’s Pacific coast.
It took 15 days to find out the price of medicines
It has taken 15 days to calculate the value of the drugs seized during the operation from October 1 to November 14. Countries including US, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands joined hands for the 6-week operation named ‘Operation Orion’. Helicopters, fighter planes and frigates from these countries were deployed.
62 countries involved in Operation Orion
Medicines have varying prices in the global market so there are varying reports about the value of the seized medicines. But Colombian authorities have confirmed that the drugs are worth $85 billion. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro himself said, ‘This is the largest amount of cocaine seized by Colombia in history. In Australia, one kilogram of cocaine is sold for up to 2.40 lakh dollars (about Rs 20 crore). The price of cocaine in Australia is three to six times the price of cocaine in the US. As seen in the Hollywood thriller, Operation Orion involved 62 countries and exchanged intelligence.
Six Colombian submarines are being monitored after they left for Australia carrying drugs in the six-week-long Operation Orion. The drug mafia was maneuvering to transport drugs through routes different from the traditional routes used for drug trafficking. But with the help of naval and air force aircraft keeping a constant watch on them, they were finally captured in the middle of the day.
Australian number one in cocaine consumption
According to data from The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Australians have the highest per capita use of cocaine in the world, followed by Britain. Colombia is the number one producer of cocaine in the world.
According to a United Nations report, Colombia is the world’s largest exporter of cocaine. Cocaine is made from coca leaves. Colombia set new records for cocaine production and coca leaf harvest last year. According to a report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), coca leaf cultivation increased by 10 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, while cocaine production increased by 53 percent from 1,738 tons to 2,600 tons.
Using a submarine that can travel 16,500 km on a single refueling
According to Colombian Navy officials, Colombia’s drug smugglers usually smuggle up to 50 kilograms of cocaine into Australia by hiding it in cargo ships. This time he sent cocaine in large quantities because he had developed a new route. Instead of cargo ships they used submarine ships. Submersible vessels are generally not inspected at sea because they move very slowly and are therefore not used for crime.
Submersible ships used in drug trafficking are highly sophisticated and do not require much fuel. A single fuel can travel up to 10,000 miles (about 16,500 km) without refueling. The drug mafia improved the design of the semi-submersible to provide additional fuel capacity.
