World Obesity Day 2024: Is obesity the reason for increasing cases of cancer in Indians?

World Obesity Day 2024: Obesity is a problem that a large population around the world is struggling with. Improper eating habits and in some cases genetics are also the main causes of obesity. Like Europe and America, the number of people suffering from obesity is increasing rapidly in India too.

It is generally believed that only people in urban areas are victims of obesity, but now the rural population in India is also falling prey to this disease. A study in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism shows that in 1989, 2 percent of India's rural population was obese, but this figure has increased to about 18 percent in 2012 and 21 percent in 2021.

Obesity causes diseases like diabetes and heart disease but do you know that it also increases the risk of cancer. A 2014 study by the American Cancer Society stated that about 11% of women and 11% of men in the US develop cancer. About 5% of cancers were linked to obesity. In India too, the risk of cancer is being seen in people suffering from obesity.

What do the experts say?

Experts say that obesity is not a direct cause of cancer, but obesity increases the risk of cancer manifold. For example, people who eat too much fast food become obese and suffer from stomach related diseases. Many diseases related to stomach cause cancer.

Being overweight or obese is clearly associated with an increased risk of several types of cancer, including:

● Breast cancer (in women before menopause)
● Colon and rectal cancer
● Endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus)
● Gall bladder cancer
● Kidney cancer
● liver cancer
● Ovarian cancer
● pancreas cancer

However, there is increasing evidence that weight loss may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer (after menopause) and endometrial cancer. Some changes occurring in the body as a result of weight loss may also indicate that
