Glasgow, March 2 (HS). American sprinter Christian Coleman won the men's 60 meters race with a record time of 6.41 seconds at the World Athletics Indoor Championships here on Friday. 27-year-old Coleman has been holding the world record of 6.34 seconds for six years.
Coleman's teammate Noah Lyles, who made a splash by winning three golds at the Budapest World Championships last August, easily reached the final on Friday. However, he could not match the experienced Coleman and finished second by a margin of 0.03-second. 22-year-old Jamaican Akeem Blake finished third with a timing of 6.46 seconds.
“You have to feel confident in yourself,” Coleman said in an official statement released by World Athletics. I just made up my mind to let my body do what I was doing in practice and I came away with the win.”
Coleman's compatriot Ryan Crouser won the men's shot put by improving the championship record to 22.77 metres.
As a world record holder, two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, Crouser won her first indoor world title with her final throw.
New Zealand's Tom Walsh won the silver medal with 22.07 metres, while Italy's Leonardo Fabbri won the bronze medal with 21.96 metres.
In the women's high jump, Australia's Nicola Olislagers won with 1.99 metres, while world champion Yaroslava Mahuchykh of Ukraine had to settle for second place.
