World Aquatics opens world's tallest competitive swimming pool in Bhutan

Thimphu, May 16 (HS). World Aquatics on Wednesday opened the first-ever competitive swimming pool at a record height of 2,400 meters in Bhutan, a part of the Pools for All program to promote aquatic sports in the region.

Swimming's global governing body launched the program in 2019, aiming to ensure accessible aquatic facilities for more countries and regions.

The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries and officials from World Aquatics, the Bhutan Olympic Committee, local and regional officials, the Bhutanese National Federation of the four Olympic Games, and the Bhutan Department of Tourism.

HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, lauded the inauguration of the country's first swimming pool, saying the venue “marks the beginning of a new era for aquatics in Bhutan.”

“The opening of this pool to all in Bhutan represents an important milestone in our mission to promote aquatic sports globally,” World Aquatics President Hussein Al-Musallam said in a statement. We are extremely proud to collaborate with Bhutan Aquatics Federation to bring this project to life. “Together, we can create opportunities and inspire athletes and aquatics enthusiasts across Bhutan.”
