New Delhi, 9 December (Hindustan Reporter). Neha, who is captaining Odisha Warriors in the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25, termed the inaugural HIL as a big platform for the next generation of players.

Having recently led the Indian team to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy, Neha now steps into the captaincy role with new energy and focus for this historic event in Indian hockey.

“We have been waiting for a platform like this for years, and now that it is finally here, it feels surreal,” Neha was quoted as saying by Hockey India. This is a great opportunity for young girls to showcase their talent on the national stage. This league will also motivate those who could not progress this season to work harder and aim for the next edition. I am confident that HIL will help in uncovering new talent for the Indian team.”

Neha, who was appointed captain of Odisha Warriors, is eager to take up the new responsibility.

He said, “This is my first major tournament as a captain, and despite the feeling of pressure, I am excited about the challenge. I have been a part of the Indian setup for some time, so I know how to move when needed. I have always accepted leadership roles, be it guiding my teammates or making important decisions on the field. Our team is full of experienced and talented players, so I won’t need to tell them much. My goal is to lead by example and bring out the best in my team.”

Despite recent personal milestones including her marriage, Neha remains focused on balancing her professional and personal commitments.

She said, “I have been managing both aspects of my life for years. My marriage will not change my approach towards sports. My husband is incredibly supportive and understands how much hockey means to me. So, my only focus right now is on HIL, and I am ready to give it my all.”

In the HIL auction, Neha was bought for Rs 10 lakh, which is a testament to her valuable contribution to the game. Although she hasn’t decided how to use the money, she hopes to contribute to the development of young athletes.

“I want to give back in some way, perhaps by supporting girls in hockey academies who need financial assistance,” she said.

Fresh from her win at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, Bihar, Neha is bringing the same confidence and determination to HIL.

“Playing in front of the home crowd is always special,” he said. The energy and support of the fans played a big role in our success in Rajgir and I am expecting a similar atmosphere in HIL as well. As a central midfielder, my aim is to support both attack and defence, and help my team in every aspect.”

As Women’s HIL prepares to revolutionize Indian women’s hockey, Neha offers advice to aspiring young players, saying, “My advice to young players is to grab this opportunity and express themselves on the field. We have waited a long time for a league like this and it is finally here. Use this platform to work hard, improve your skills and shine in the early stages of your career.”
