Paris: Indian female shooter Manu Bhaker created history by winning the bronze medal in the 10 meter air pistol event at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris. With this, India opened its account in the medal tally of the Paris Games. When India's 12-year medal 'exile' in Olympic shooting came to a happy end. Manu Bhaker also became the first Indian female shooter to win a medal in Olympic shooting, while overall India won this fifth medal in Olympic shooting. While this was India's second Olympic medal in pistol shooting.
India last won a silver and bronze medal in shooting at the 2012 London Olympics. Incidentally, Gagan Narang, the shooter who won a bronze medal for India at the 2012 Olympics, is the Chief de Mission of the Indian team at the Paris Games. Earlier, India's only medal in pistol shooting was won by Vijay Kumar, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Haryana's 22-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal with a score of 221.7 in the final of the 10 meter air pistol event. Manu Bhaker, who once secured second place in the final, had to settle for third place. South Korea's Oh Ye-jin won the gold medal with a score of 243.2, setting a new Olympic record. While South Korea's Kim Ye-ji won the silver medal with a score of 241.3.
With this, India has opened its account in the medal tally of Paris Olympics 2024. An interesting record is that in the last Olympics held in Tokyo, India won its first medal on the second day itself and that too was won by a female athlete. Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the Tokyo Games.
