Annual income of a woman member of Self Help Group (SHG) is Rs 1 lakh: Modi government's Lakhpati Didi Yojana is a scheme under which women are given loans without interest. This loan is completely interest free and its limit can be from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. The government is trying to create and establish economic empowerment and financial independence among women. There is just one condition to avail this scheme, that this loan will be given only to those women who are members of Self Help Group (SHG).
Last year, the target of the number of women taking benefit under this scheme was set at 2 crores, but in this year's interim budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced to increase this number from 2 crores to 3 crores. Since here an attempt is being made to increase the total income of the family to one lakh rupees due to the woman or women, hence it was named Lakhpati Didi Yojana.
What are self-help groups – Small groups of women living in rural areas save money together and lend money to each other. Citing data from Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) released in December 2023, a Down to Earth report states that there are 90 lakh SHGs in India, which have about 100 million women members. It started in some rural areas in the 1970s. Self-employed women's association (SEWA) in Gujarat was most talked about.
Under the Lakhpati Didi scheme, an annual income of Rs 1 lakh is calculated for at least four agricultural seasons or business cycles. And, this calculation has been kept for those whose average monthly income is more than ten thousand rupees due to the stability of income. This scheme is implemented by the Rural Ministry of the Government. Giving vocational training, taking the goods to the market, providing necessary skills and training, all this is possible under this scheme.
