NDA Government: During the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had prominently placed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in its manifesto. It will not be easy for the BJP to make it a law as it does not have a majority on its own.
For this, its dependence on TDP and Nitish Kumar's JDU has increased. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal had said on Tuesday that UCC is still on the government's agenda and we have to wait and see what happens.
JDU has also reacted to his statement. JDU national general secretary KC Tyagi, while talking to English newspaper Indian Express on Wednesday, said, “Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had written a letter to the Law Commission on UCC in 2017. Our stand is the same even today. We are not against UCC, but we want a consensus on this issue.”
In his 2017 letter, Nitish had written, “The government should try to bring in a Uniform Civil Code. There should be a broad consensus to make this effort permanent and sustainable. It should not be imposed by any order.”
The JD(U), the third largest party in the NDA, had earlier said the UCC should be seen as a reform measure and not a political tool.
Along with this, TDP, the second largest ally of NDA with 16 MPs, has said that issues like UCC should be discussed and resolved together.
