All England Club officials have announced that Wimbledon's total prize money has been raised to a record five million pounds (about $6.4 million).
Each singles champion will receive 2.7 million pounds ($3.45 million). Total prize money is 5.3 million pounds ($6.3 million) more than last year, an 11.9 percent increase. That's almost double the £2.5 million paid out at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament ten years ago.
Deborah Jevans, the new president of the All England Club, said that there has been no decrease in the demand for tickets this year. This time the prize money for the winners in each category has been increased by 350,000 pounds. The players who lose in the first round of singles will be given a prize of 60,000 pounds. Last year this amount was 55,000 pounds. The prize money of the qualifying tournament has increased by 14.9 percent to 49 million pounds (about 6 million dollars).
