Bangladesh Politics: Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and President of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia reached London. Where after seven years he met his son Tariq Rehman at Heathrow Airport. It is noteworthy that 79 year old Khaleda Zia had reached London for treatment by Qatar’s Royal Air Ambulance. Now there is a debate going on in political circles as to when will former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia return to lead the party? The question is whether the political situation in Bangladesh will allow them to return?

According to reports, BNP Standing Committee member Dr Mosharraf Hussain said, ‘We are hopeful that Khaleda Zia will return to lead the country after her recovery.’ Meanwhile, discussion of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also necessary. Sheikh Hasina is in India since the student movement in Bangladesh in August 2024. The Yunus government of Bangladesh is demanding her extradition from India, but recently by extending the validity of Sheikh Hasina’s visa, India has given a message to Bangladesh that India has no such intention at present.

Former PM Sheikh Hasina’s passport canceled

Mohammad Yunus has also canceled Sheikh Hasina’s passport. Even second-ranking leaders of Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League are not in Bangladesh due to fear of government action. The Yunus administration has issued arrest warrants against the former prime minister and senior officials of his administration.

Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, two leaders who dominated Bangladeshi politics for decades, are out of active politics. Here, Mohammad Yunus is not even discussing new elections in Bangladesh.

When Mohammad Yunus was handed over the reins of Bangladesh, he promised to hold elections within three months. His tenure had ended in November itself. Addressing the nation in December last year, he had said, ‘Elections in the country may be held in late 2025 or early 2026.’ Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia’s visit to London is being viewed with suspicion. It is noteworthy that Yunus government had withdrawn all the charges imposed on Khaleda Zia by Sheikh Hasina government. After this he left the country and reached London.
