Making a career in the field of medical and healthcare sector is still the biggest dream of millions of youth of the country. Whenever medical field is mentioned, the first name that comes to people’s mind is MBBS. But do you know that apart from becoming a doctor, there is such a great option in this field, in which even without NEET, you can make a very good and respectable career? We are talking about B.Sc Nursing. Let us understand from a reporter’s point of view what is the main difference between these two popular courses and which option can prove to be the best for your future.
What is the big difference between course duration and studies? Both MBBS and B.Sc Nursing are very important pillars of the medical field, but their method of study and responsibilities are completely different. MBBS i.e. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is a five and a half year (including internship) undergraduate degree course, which mainly provides in-depth study of disease treatment, surgery and prescription of medicines. On the other hand, B.Sc Nursing is a 4 year professional degree course. During this course, students are taught the nuances of patient care, hospital management, critical care and assisting doctors.
Can I get admission even without NEET exam? This question arises in the mind of every student who is not able to pass the difficult examination of NEET or does not want to appear in it. Let us tell you that for doing MBBS, it is legally mandatory to pass the NEET (NEET-UG) examination to get admission in any government or private medical college of the country. Without this you cannot study to become a doctor. But this is not the case with B.Sc Nursing. Many big institutes and state governments conduct their own entrance exams for admission to B.Sc Nursing, while some colleges even offer direct admission on the basis of 12th marks. This means that even without NEET, you can become a part of this excellent medical course.
What is the difference between career scope and job profiles? Talking about success, there is no dearth of jobs after completing both the courses. After completing MBBS, you become a certified doctor and can work as a junior resident, medical officer or start your own clinic in government or private hospitals. Whereas, after doing B.Sc Nursing, candidates can become Staff Nurse, Nursing Superintendent, Military Nurse, Community Health Officer (CHO) or tutor in nursing colleges. Apart from this, nowadays the demand for Indian nurses in foreign countries (like UK, USA, Canada and Gulf countries) has increased very rapidly, which also opens the way for international careers.
Who is ahead in terms of salary and earnings? In terms of earnings and salary package, MBBS doctors have the upper hand in the beginning. The starting salary of a new MBBS doctor can range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month, which reaches crores after experience and specialization (MD/MS). Whereas, after doing B.Sc Nursing, the starting salary is between Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000 per month. However, in big central hospitals like AIIMS, the starting salary of a Nursing Officer is more than Rs 70,000. Also, nurses working abroad easily earn huge income of lakhs of rupees every month.
