The Supreme Court said it will hear after eight weeks a plea seeking a ban on a website that pokes fun at members of the Sikh community and presents them in a bad image. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan said, “This is an important matter.
Jokes on women’s clothes
Petitioner Harvinder Chaudhary informed the bench that he would consolidate his suggestions as well as those of other parties in the case and file a brief. The bench gave him eight weeks’ time and listed the matter for further hearing. During the hearing, Choudhary highlighted the grievances of women from the Sikh community who were ridiculed for their dress. Apart from this, he also told about the problems of Sikh children in schools. The bench said, “You prepare a concise compilation so that it is easy to read.”
Over 5,000 websites have been mentioned
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the petition in October 2015, following which more petitions raising similar complaints were filed. The petitioner had earlier mentioned that there are more than 5,000 websites which feature jokes on Sikhs and portray members of the community in a bad image. The petition said that such websites displaying jokes on Sikhs should be banned as they violate the fundamental right to life and dignity given under the Constitution.
