The general elections to be held in Israel today, i.e. on October 27, stand at a very important juncture in terms of the country’s political future as well as global diplomacy. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been the most influential face in Israeli politics for the past several decades, is facing the toughest challenge of his political career this time. In opinion polls, his party Likud is facing a tough competition from former army chief Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar Party and other opposition parties. In such a situation, the question has become big in the diplomatic circles around the world that if Netanyahu is out of power, will there be any difference to the deep friendship and strategic partnership between India and Israel?
Relations between India and Israel have gone beyond the personal chemistry of any one person or leader and have taken an institutional form. According to diplomatic experts and clear statements from the Israeli Embassy, this relationship rests on a strong foundation. The personal friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu has definitely given a new impetus to bilateral relations in the last few years, but areas like defense cooperation, agricultural technology, space research, water management and intelligence sharing between the two countries are so deep and wide that there is no possibility of any decline in them despite the change of leadership in power there. Israel has been a reliable partner for India in West Asia and Tel Aviv’s relations with New Delhi are based on the national interests of both the countries.
The main issues in these Israeli elections have been the security crisis faced by the country during the last few years, the conflicts related to Gaza and Iran and the working style of Netanyahu. Analysts believe that even if Gadi Eizenkot or any other opposition coalition comes to power, there will be no fundamental change in the fundamental principles of Israel’s national security policy and foreign policy with important strategic friends like India. India has always supported stability and peace in West Asia, and India-Israel trade and diplomatic channels will always remain open and strong. Therefore, from the Indian point of view, this election may change the equations of power, but it will not have any negative impact on the unbreakable friendship and strategic partnership between India and Israel.
