Till the Corona period, senior citizens and women of the country were getting the benefit of discount on train tickets. This facility was discontinued from March 2020. Earlier, female senior citizens were getting 50 percent discount on train tickets and male and transgender senior citizens were getting 40 percent discount. This discount on train tickets was available on all express and mail trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi. According to the Railways, senior citizens include men and transgenders aged 60 years or above and women aged 58 years or above.
Benefit to railways
Railways has benefited a lot by ending the concession on train tickets for senior citizens. An RTI has revealed that between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023, the Railways did not give relief to about 8 crore senior citizens. Railways received a total revenue of Rs 5,062 crore from senior citizens during this period. This also includes an additional Rs 2,242 crore received by removing the subsidy.
