There is a big and relieving news for the passengers traveling on Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, which is one of the busiest and jam-affected routes of the national capital Delhi. The Public Works Department (PWD) is working rapidly on the plan of a new elevated corridor to eliminate the daily traffic jams on this major arterial road. The main objective of this ambitious project is to reduce the traffic pressure on this busy route of South Delhi and provide signal-free and smooth travel to the passengers.

According to media reports, PWD has officially approved a budget of about Rs 2 crore for the detailed technical, financial and environmental study (Feasibility Study) of this proposed elevated corridor.

The new corridor will be 5.5 to 6 kilometers long

The total length of the proposed elevated road will be approximately between 5.5 to 6 kilometers. This corridor will start from Kishangarh village located near Vasant Kunj and will go up to the famous IIT Flyover located at the Outer Ring Road-Aurobindo Marg junction. This route will pass through many of the most important and educational institutions of South Delhi, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Vasant Kunj, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Qutub Institute.

At present, due to heavy traffic on Aruna Asaf Ali Marg and many intersections, vehicles are forced to crawl during peak hours. PWD officials have identified major congestion points on this route, which will become completely signal-free after the construction of this corridor:

1. Traffic signal located near Fortis Hospital.

2. Three road cuts and two busy traffic signals present in Kishangarh village.

3. Intersections around Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

4. Area near Sanjay Van.

5. Qutub Institutional Area.

6. Very busy turn of Ber Sarai.

South Delhi and Gurgaon-NCR connectivity will improve

Aruna Asaf Ali Marg is a backbone road connecting Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj and Mehrauli directly to the Outer Ring Road and Central Delhi. According to PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the main objective of this proposed elevated corridor is to separate through-traffic and local traffic vehicles.

Following the instructions of the recent high-level review meeting chaired by the Secretary to the Chief Minister, PWD had approved the appointment of its study consultant on July 20. After the report of this study comes, the time limit for the construction work of the project will be decided. With its construction, passengers traveling from South Delhi to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport), Gurgaon and Noida will save a lot of precious time and fuel.
