Tension has once again increased between India and Canada. The Indian government's stance seems to be tough regarding Canada's baseless allegations in the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case. In September last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first made serious allegations against India in this matter. Even then diplomatic relations between the two countries were tense.
Now once again Canada has suspected the Indian High Commissioner and some diplomats of crossing the border in this matter, so the Indian government has taken major action and recalled its diplomats and asked six Canadian diplomats to leave India. According to the information, the main reason for the aggression of the Trudeau government of Canada is the elections to be held next year. Trudeau is considering India as his vote bank.
Justin Trudeau was expelled from India with the help of five countries?
Regarding this whole tension, when the Foreign Minister of Canada was asked about imposing sanctions on India, he said that we have all options open. This statement of the Foreign Minister raises the question on what basis is Canada giving such threats to India. The Trudeau government is trying to increase pressure on India with the help of five eyes.
The Five Ice Group competes against Canada as well as the United States, Britain, New Zealand and Australia. All these countries share intelligence information with each other. Therefore it is considered the strongest intelligence system in the world. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said he has uncovered substantial evidence with the Five Five Group regarding India's alleged role in the Niger murder case. However, except Canada, the rest of the five age group countries have ties with India. Despite the ongoing tension with Canada last year, relations between India and these four countries have not deteriorated. It is believed that if Canada imposes sanctions on India, then relations with other Five Ice countries will also become sour with India.
Will America go against India?
Five Eyes member America has asked India to cooperate on Canada's baseless allegations in Niger genocide, 'We want the Indian government to investigate these allegations.' Even before this, America has given a statement in favor of Canada in this matter. However, America has admitted that India is taking seriously the allegations of attempt to assassinate Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu.
Apart from these statements, if we look at India-America relations, both the countries are strong allies, especially due to China's aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, India's support is very important for America to protect its interests. In such a situation, it does not seem possible for America to support any kind of sanctions against India in this entire matter.
Measured statements from other countries including Britain
On the other hand, Britain has entered the whole controversy. Canada has spoken by phone with Prime Minister Keir Starr, with both leaders stressing the importance of law and order. However, the statement issued by the British Prime Minister's Office did not directly mention India.
India also has good relations with Australia and New Zealand, although no recent statement has been issued by these countries regarding Canada's allegations. However, earlier statements on the issue were very balanced and measured, so that it never seemed that these five-eyed allies were standing with Canada against India.
Canada suffers loss due to ban on India
If Canada imposes any kind of sanctions against India, it may cause huge loss to Canada. Because, it is clear from the stand of the Indian government that it can take immediate action on these baseless allegations of Canada. If this happens, it will not be possible for Canadian companies to do business in India, while it will also have a major impact on the ongoing bilateral trade between the two countries. Bilateral trade between India and Canada Talking about trade relations between the two countries, Canadian companies have invested about $ 11.9 billion in India between 2019 and 2023.
Recently more than 600 Canadian companies are present in India and more than a thousand Canadian companies are actively doing business in India. In the year 2023, there was a trade of $9.36 billion between India and Canada, whereas between January and April this year, there was a trade of $3.11 billion. Apart from this, Canada's pension fund has invested about Rs 4575 billion in India. In such a situation, if Canada imposes any kind of economic-trade restriction, it will affect Canadian companies and their investments in India.
