Ahmedabad, March 12 (HS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment Project in the 'Ashram Bhoomi Vandana' program organized at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, on the occasion of the Dandi March Day. Along with this he also inaugurated the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram.
In his welcome address on this occasion, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that Bapu had started the freedom movement from this land by marching on Dandi on March 12, 1930 to free the country from the slavery of British rule. Today, on the same land, in the nectar of independence, with the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Reconstruction Project is being launched. This is a matter of pride for all our countrymen and Gujarat.
Patel said Mahatma Gandhi established Sabarmati Ashram; Since then this ashram has been the center of creative work, fundamental principles, Satyagraha and experiments of spiritual thoughts. Before independence, decisions of many people's movements were taken from this sacred land. Not only this; The dream of independence of the country has also come true from this land.
He expressed confidence that the reconstruction project will make Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram a pilgrimage site of modern India. He said that the Prime Minister had expressed the idea of reconstruction of Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram during his Ashram visit in the year 2021 and that idea is being realized today. He said that this project, along with maintaining the core of morality, essence and essence, will become a medium for spreading the heritage and Gandhian ideas and Gandhian values in a new form in the world. The Chief Minister said that on the occasion of Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, the Prime Minister had flagged off the Dandi March from Gandhi Ashram on March 12, 2021 to realize the idea of 'Ek Bharat – Shrestha Bharat' and making India a world leader. He expressed confidence that in such a situation, as per the guarantee of development and preservation of heritage through the reconstruction project of the ashram, the new complex will enhance the glory of the heritage.
Land acquisition process was unique
Describing the land acquisition process as unique, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that due to communication and cooperation with the ashram residents and trustees, the land acquisition work has been completed without the use of law, due to which the construction work is starting on time. The Chief Minister expressed special gratitude to the Prime Minister for the financial support given by the Central Government to the new campus which has been built on 55 acres at a huge cost of Rs 1200 crore. Besides, he also expressed his gratitude to all the people who contributed to this project.
Cost of Rs 1200 crore, project in 55 acres
It is noteworthy here that the purpose of this proposed project spread over 55 acres with a cost of Rs 1200 crore is to establish the identity of Sabarmati Ashram and its surrounding infrastructure by developing it and providing modern facilities to the visitors-tourists along with creating a world class temple dedicated to Gandhiji. A memorial has to be constructed. This memorial will become inspirational for the future generations and will increase the influence of Gandhiji's thoughts. Here, along with informative exhibitions depicting the divine life of Gandhiji and the grand legacy of the Ashram, one can also see interactive exhibitions depicting the Satyagraha and freedom struggle started by Pujya Bapu in Sabarmati Ashram. Other than this; This complex will be equipped with a lecture center and public facilities like food court, souvenir shop etc. for visitors and tourists. This project includes conservation of 20 old houses, renovation of 13 houses and redevelopment of 3 houses while maintaining the simplicity and authorized structures of the main ashram. Its objective is to create a pure, clean, peaceful and green environment for the people visiting Sabarmati Ashram.
