5 Days Working in Bank: Will banks start opening only for 5 days from December? This is a big question which has been in the minds of crores of bank customers and bank employees for a long time. Bank employees have been advocating for 5 days work in banks for a long time. However, in lieu of reducing 2 Saturdays, banks will have to work 40 minutes extra every day. There have been several discussions between the Bank Employees Union, RBI and government officials regarding working for 5 days in banks. A decision on this is to be taken in the month of December. Know here whether soon banks will work for 5 days in December also?

What is the proposal to make banks work 5 days a week?

Till now banks in the country remain closed on all Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. At present banks have holidays except one Saturday. That means work has to be done on one Saturday and work is done on the next Saturday. Now bank employees and bank unions have been insisting on a 5-day working week for a long time. That means work in banks should be from Monday to Friday and there will be holiday in banks on all Saturdays and Sundays. That means bank employees are demanding 8 holidays instead of 6 in a month. For this, an agreement has been reached between bank employee unions and Indian Banks Association (IBA).

Will this be a new time for opening and closing of all private-public sector bank branches?

According to reports, if the government approves this proposal, banking hours can be extended by 40 minutes. Along with this, bank branches will remain open from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. Currently most banks open till 10 am. Public dealing takes place till 4 pm. The unions have assured that the implementation of 5-day work will not affect customer service. The working hours of bank employees will be increased by about 40 minutes every day.

The joint note is to be signed in March 2024

The 9th Joint Note has been signed between IBA and bank unions in March 2024. This also includes the proposal to work 5 days a week. However, banks will open only for 5 days, to implement this, approval from the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is required.

Will 5 day work start in banks from December?

The demand for a 5-day working week for bank employees is finding it difficult to be fulfilled in December. All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) has expressed displeasure over this and said that it will soon plan an agitation. AIBOC General Secretary Rupam Roy said that no indication has been received from the government yet about introducing a 5-day work week. We have urged all our associate unions and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to join the movement. AIBOC has appealed to the government and the Prime Minister’s Office to give priority to this proposal. The union has said that this is not only necessary for the welfare of the employees, but it will also improve the level of functioning of the banking sector.
