For the first time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed to celebrate International Yoga Day in the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September 2014. The United Nations General Assembly approved PM Modi's proposal on 11 December 2014 and declared 21 June as International Yoga Day. This proposal has received the support of 177 countries.
The first time Yoga Day was celebrated was on 21 June 2015. In India the main event was held at Rajpath in New Delhi in which more than 35000 people participated.
