Why is the festival of Nag Panchami celebrated? Know the myth

Nag Panchami 2024 Vrat Katha: According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. This day is dedicated to the worship of the snake deity. It is believed that worshiping the snake deity on the day of Nag Panchami fulfills wishes. There is a tradition of worshiping snake deities since ancient times. It is believed that worshiping snakes removes the fear of snakes. According to astrology, worshiping the snake deities on the day of Nag Panchami brings blessings to people.

There are two Nag Panchami in the month of Shravan. The first Nag Panchami is on 9th August and is Friday. While the second Nag Panchami comes on 23rd August, Friday.

Mythology of Nag Panchami
According to the legend, Janmejaya was the son of King Parikshit, the grandson of Arjun. When Janmejaya came to know that the cause of his father's death was snakebite, he organized a yajna called Sarpasatra to take revenge. To protect the snakes, Aastik Muni stopped the yajna on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month and protected the snakes. This saved the snake clan as Takshak snake survived. The sage poured raw milk over the snake to protect it from the heat of the fire. From then on, Nagpanchami started being celebrated. From there, the tradition of offering milk to the snake god started.

The snake deities who are remembered and worshipped on the day of Nag Panchami. The prominent names among them are Anant, Vasuki, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Kulir, Karakat, Shankh, Kaliya and Pingal. On this day, there is a tradition of making 8 figures of snakes on the door of the house. Worship the snake deity by offering turmeric, roli, rice and flowers. Mix ghee and sugar in raw milk and offer it while remembering the snake god.
