Why is JMM MLA Sanjeev Sardar sitting on a chair at the gate of the zonal office?

These days, a unique and surprising protest by an MLA in the political and administrative corridors of Jharkhand is spreading like wildfire on social media. Sanjiv Sardar, a prominent and popular MLA of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) from Potka assembly seat of East Singhbhum district, adopted a unique method against the widespread helplessness in public works and corruption prevalent in government offices, which surprised everyone. MLA Sanjeev Sardar suddenly sat on dharna by placing his chair at the main gate of Potka Circle Office and when one by one government employees and officers started entering the office, instead of scolding or threatening anyone, he started garlanding them with respect. When the secret behind this sharp and unique taunt was revealed, the officers were embarrassed and there was a stir in the zonal office.

It is often seen that the general public keeps circling in the government offices since morning regarding their small caste certificates, residential certificates, land mutation and measurement matters, but the Babus are not found on their chairs on time. Potka MLA Sanjeev Sardar, during his visit to his constituency, was continuously receiving complaints that the officers and employees of the zonal office are acting arbitrarily and keeping the public’s applications pending for months. Fed up with this arrangement, the MLA decided that he himself would reach the main gate of the zonal office early in the morning and welcome the employees coming late by garlanding them. As soon as the employees reached the office after or without the scheduled time, the MLA garlanded them and with folded hands said, ‘You people are public servants, please come on time and work for the poor.’

MLA Sanjeev Sardar, sitting on a chair at the gate of the zonal office, said in clear words that the people of Potka assembly constituency have elected him as their representative so that they do not have to make rounds of government offices. While talking to the media and local citizens present on the spot, the MLA said that how illegal recovery is being made from the general public and files are being deliberately suppressed in the name of land mutation, land reforms and other works related to the area, this will not be tolerated anymore. He said in a warning tone that if the working style of the employees and officers does not improve, then this ‘Gandhigiri’ protest can take an even more extreme form and he will directly complain to the Chief Minister and the Revenue Department at the state level.

This sudden and harsh display by the MLA created a stir in the zonal office. In a hurry, the Circle Officer (CO) and other key employees came out from their chairs and met the MLA. Admitting their mistake, the officials assured that from now on all the offices will open on time and the pending cases of the public will be resolved within the stipulated time limit. This unique step taken by the MLA in favor of the public is being highly appreciated at the local level. People are saying that if every public representative comes out on the streets like this against administrative negligence, then the lagging system in government offices will automatically come back on track.

In today’s digital age, when ‘JMM MLA Sanjiv Sardar Circle Office Protest’ has become the fastest trending topic on Google, Bing and modern AI search engines (GEO), then such actions of local public representatives have become a major medium to fix administrative accountability. This video and pictures of the MLA garlanding him have been shared thousands of times on social media. This incident is a perfect example of how through political will and constructive protest, the voice of the people can be conveyed to the powerful administrative machinery.
