Banaras is also called the city of salvation. It is believed that by leaving the body here one attains salvation. Banaras is counted among the oldest cities of the world.

It is believed that the history of Banaras is about 3000 years old, that is, the city dates back to about the 11th century BC, although some scholars also claim that this city situated on the banks of the Ganges is 4000-5000 years old.

Varanasi is called the spiritual city of India. Apart from this, this city is also known as Banaras and Kashi all over the world. This city holds great importance in Hindu religion and is considered a very holy place. This city has its own spiritual significance because of the presence of Ganga and Lord Shiva here.

The city of Varanasi takes its name from two local rivers, Varuna River and Asi River. These two rivers, Varuna and Asi, come from the north and south and join the river Ganga. Apart from this, it is also said about the name of this city that in ancient times, Varuna river would have been called Varanasi, due to which this city was called Varanasi. Apart from this, this city is also known by the names Banaras, Kashi, Bholenath city etc.

According to religious beliefs and mythology, the city of Varanasi was originated or founded by Lord Shiva around 5000 years ago. Apart from this, Lord Shiva himself is present here in the form of Kashi Vishwanath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.

This is the reason why even today Banaras is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus. The city is mentioned in many Hindu scriptures including Skanda Purana, Ramayana, Mahabharata, the oldest Vedas, Rigveda.
