Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma: After the crushing defeat in the Test series against New Zealand at home, the Indian team will now go to Australia for the next tour. Where a test series of 5 matches is to be held. Recently there have been reports that captain Rohit Sharma will not be able to play the first 1 or 2 tests due to personal reasons. In such a situation, former veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has told the BCCI in clear words regarding the captain.
Sunil Gavaskar said, 'It is important for a captain to play the first Test. If the captain is not found in the first fight, then there is more pressure on the vice-captain. It will not be easy for him (vice-captain) to take responsibility again. It is being told that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first test, perhaps not even in the second test. If it is so, then I say that now the Indian selection committee should tell Rohit that if you want to take rest then take rest, if there is any personal reason then look into that also.
Regarding the importance of the captain in the team, Gavaskar said, 'If you are not playing in two-thirds of the matches, then you are going on this tour only as a player. We will appoint a vice-captain for the team in this tour who will be the captain of the Indian team. Cricket is most important. If we had won the series 3-0 against New Zealand, the situation would have been different. Because we have lost we need a captain.
Expressing his views, Gavaskar clearly said, 'The captain will have to unite the team. 'If there is no captain in the beginning then it is better to make another captain.'
