Why did BJP lose in Ayodhya? They got the Ram temple but people are upset with it

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: The election results that came on Tuesday have been shocking for the BJP, which won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a huge majority for the third time in a row with the slogan of '400 Paar'. The results of the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections have also been shocking. These results were disturbing not only for political parties but also for political pundits. However, the most different results came from the Faizabad (Ayodhya) Lok Sabha seat. Where BJP candidate Lallu Singh has lost by 50 thousand votes. Now the question in everyone's mind is that how can the BJP lose the seat on which the Ram temple was built and inaugurated with great pomp? But now that the results have come, it has to be accepted.

Ram Mandir could not be converted into a vote

Tiwari, the BJP's counting agent, said, “We worked hard, we fought for it, but the construction of Ram temple did not translate into votes.” Silence descended at the BJP office, about a kilometre from the counting centre, as the picture of the results became clear. Laxmikant Tiwari sat in an almost deserted BJP election office in Ayodhya, about a kilometre from the Government Inter College of Ayodhya, which serves as the counting centre for the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat.

Just four months after the Ram Mandir issue got a new lease of life, the BJP lost the Lok Sabha elections in Faizabad, which is also part of Ayodhya. The Ram Mandir issue was a talking point during the election campaign. The UP results also defied all exit polls, which showed the NDA winning 71-73 seats. This time, the BJP has fallen far short of its target of 370 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. The defeat in Ayodhya is particularly grave.

Local people are upset due to land acquisition

Laxmikant Tiwari said that there were local issues which were at the centre. People of many villages in Ayodhya were upset with the land acquisition happening around the temple and the airport. At the same time, BSP votes were pulled towards the Samajwadi Party due to Awadhesh Prasad being a Dalit leader. A nine-time MLA and one of the prominent Dalit faces of the SP, Awadhesh Prasad defeated Lallu Singh by a margin of 54,567 votes, who was contesting again for the third time.

After his victory, Prasad said, “This is a historic victory because our national president Akhilesh Yadav has fielded me from a general seat. People supported me rising above caste and community.” Unemployment, inflation, land acquisition and 'constitutional change' are echoing in the BJP's extraordinary defeat.

400 seats are needed to change the constitution

Before the election, Lallu Singh was among the BJP leaders who had said the party needed 400 seats to “change the Constitution”. Vijay Yadav, 27, a resident of Mitrasenpur village, who was waiting outside the counting centre, said the MP should not have said that. The Constitution was one of the main issues that Awadhesh Prasad (the winning SP candidate) raised and continues to raise in his rallies.

People voted for change

Vijay Yadav said, “Paper leak was the second major reason. I am also a victim of it. Since I don't have a job, I have started working with my father in our fields. People voted for change here because our MP has done nothing here except hiding his failure on Ram Mandir and Ram Path (one of the four roads leading to Ayodhya).”

People were angry with the government for not fulfilling its promise

A BJP supporter said the grandeur of the Ram temple may have impressed outsiders but the city residents are unhappy with the inconvenience. “The truth is that very few Ayodhya residents visit the temple, where most devotees are outsiders. Ram is our idol but how will we survive if you snatch away our livelihood? During the construction of Ram Path, the local people were promised that shops would be allotted to them but that did not happen,” he said.

SP candidate spoke about rehabilitation of people

On his plan for Ayodhya, the victorious SP candidate said, “The BJP government has displaced many people (during the work of widening roads leading to the temple). I will work for their rehabilitation. I will work to ensure proper compensation for those whose land has been taken away.”
