Gold jewellery and other items are gifted by parents at the time of marriage. When a marriage breaks, who owns these things called Stridhan, the Supreme Court has given its verdict on this. It states that a woman is the sole owner of her Stridhan. After divorce, the woman's father has no right to get these gifts back from the former in-laws.
P Veerabhadra Rao's daughter got married in December 1999. After marriage, the husband and wife went to America. After 16 years of marriage, the wife filed for divorce. In February 2016, the marriage was dissolved by mutual consent in the Lewis County Circuit Court of Missouri.
A separate settlement was reached regarding property and financial matters. The woman remarried in 2018 after the divorce. Three years later, P Veerabhadra Rao filed an FIR against his daughter's former in-laws in Hyderabad for dowry recovery.
The woman's in-laws sought quashing of the FIR in a Telangana court but were unsuccessful. After all, since the case is pending in the Supreme Court, the father has no right to take back his daughter's dowry. The woman has full rights over her stridhan. The daughter has full rights as long as she is alive.
