Wholesale Inflation June 2026: Double blow to the general public! After retail, wholesale inflation also uncontrolled, increased to record level of 9.87% in June

The impact of inflation in the country is becoming increasingly heavy on the common man and the wholesale market. Just a day after the shock on the retail inflation front, wholesale inflation has also increased the concerns of the government and the general public.

According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation has increased to a very high level of 9.87% in June 2026. In the previous month i.e. May, this rate was recorded at 9.68%. According to the government, the main reason for this increase is the huge rise in the prices of food items, mineral oil, basic metals and chemical products.

WPI index rose to 110.2; Outcry in retail too

The main index of all commodities (WPI Index) in the wholesale market has increased from 109.9 in May to 110.2 in June.

  • Retail inflation (CPI) shock: Released just a day before these wholesale inflation figures, retail inflation has also increased from 3.93% in May to 4.38% in June.

  • Food Retail Inflation (CFPI): Food inflation at the consumer level has also jumped sharply to 5.32% in June, which was 4.78% in May. That means prices are continuously going up on both fronts of the market.

Thali becomes expensive: huge increase in food items

Within the wholesale index, the greatest pressure is being seen in primary articles and food items:

  • Primary Articles: The wholesale inflation rate of primary articles increased directly from 4.99% in May to 7% in June.

  • Food Index: The inflation rate of food items in the wholesale market has increased from 3.6% to 5.49%. At the same time, inflation of non-food articles has also jumped from 9.49% to 11.07%.

  • WPI Food Index: The WPI Food Index, which combines both primary and manufactured food products, has increased from 114.0 in May to 115.8 in June, due to which the annual food wholesale inflation rate was recorded at 6.14%.

Condition of fuel, electricity and manufacturing sector

Just as the performance of different sectors in the stock market or mutual funds varies, the wholesale inflation basket too has seen a mixed trend across different groups:

Major Groups (WPI Categories) Rate in May 2026 Rate in June 2026 market situation
Fuel & Power 30.33% 27.41% Partial softening recorded
Mineral Oils 49.82% 46.48% minor improvements
Crude Oil and Natural Gas 61.51% 34.75% Big fall due to global prices
Manufacturing Products 7.48% 7.48% Completely stable (index 107.8)
Basic Metals 12.31% Strength from industrial demand
Chemicals and Chemical Products 12.78% At high level even after partial reduction

Growth seen in manufacturing food also

Even though the inflation of total manufacturing products has remained stable at 7.48%, the inflation rate of food products made in factories has increased to 7.2%. This clearly means that in the coming days, there may be an increase in the prices of packed food and daily used FMCG items at the retail level, due to which the pocket budget of common consumers is likely to deteriorate further.
