Who was Trijata? (Vibhishana’s daughter or Ravana’s maid)

There are different opinions regarding Trijata in different Ramayana and mythological texts:

Vibhishana’s daughter: According to the most popular belief, Trijata was the daughter of Ravana’s younger brother and Vibhishan, an ardent devotee of Lord Shri Ram. Despite being born in a demonic clan, she was of religious and virtuous nature like her father.

Protector of Ashok Vatika: Ravana had deployed many cruel demons, including Trijata, to frighten and mentally break Sita Mata. However, unlike other demons, Trijata had compassion and affection towards Sita.

Why did Sita ji say ‘Mother’?

According to Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, when Ravana went to scare Sita ji, other demons used to torture him. At such a time, Trijata was the only support who boosted the morale of Mother Sita.

Comfort and Security: Trijata scolded the other demons and consoled Sita ji that her Lord Shri Ram would definitely come.

The path of truth: Trijata had told Sita ji about his divine dream in which he had seen the destruction of Lanka and the victory of Shri Ram. This trust gave new hope to live in Sita ji’s mind. Because of this selfless love and affection, Sita ji gave him ‘Mother’ Addressed by saying.

Trijata’s dream that shook Lanka

A detailed description of Trijata’s dream is found in Sunderkand of Ramcharitmanas. He scared the other demons by narrating his dream, so that they would not harass Sita ji:

“Dreams of Monkey Lanka continue, Jatudhan Sena kills everything.”

That is, he saw in his dream that a monkey (Hanuman ji) had burnt the entire Lanka and the demonic army had been destroyed. In his dream, he had seen Ravana riding naked on a donkey and going towards the south direction (direction of death), while he had seen Vibhishana getting coronated at the feet of Shri Ram. This dream removed Mother Sita’s doubts and she believed that the end of her suffering was near.

Trijata’s honor and boon

According to mythology, after the war when Shri Ram was victorious and Sita ji was tested by fire, Mother Sita specially honored Trijata for her incomparable service and love. According to many regional beliefs, Trijata has the boon that wherever Ramayana is sung even in Kaliyuga, the stories of her devotion and love will be heard with great respect.
